Heidrick & Struggles: Results of Global Demographic Study of Chief Executive Officers

Heidrick & Struggles has released the results of their fourth demographic study of global chief executive officers. Heidrick surveyed current chief executives of over 300 companies in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany and provides insight into the demographics of top leaders and comparisons between countries as well as within industry sectors. 

Notable results include:

  • The average age of chief executives in the United States is 59, higher than in the UK, France, and Germany.
  • Only 8% of CEOs are female in the United States, 6% in the United Kingdom, 2% in France, and 1% in Germany.
  • Finance is the most common functional background of CEOs in the United States, the UK, and Germany. In France, the most common functional background is engineering.
