The Next Big “Arenas” of Competition

This session highlights the fastest-growing and most dynamic industries—“arenas”—where competition is fierce, but rewards are substantial. McKinsey research identifies 12 past arenas, like cloud services, EVs, and biopharma, that grew over twice as fast as other sectors between 2005 and 2020, capturing 50% of economic profit. These arenas emerge from a blend of breakthrough technologies, escalating investments, and expanding markets.

Kevin Russell, Senior Fellow at McKinsey Global Institute and lead author of McKinsey’s Arenas report identifies 18 potential arenas—driven by digitization, the green transition, and advancements like AI and robotics—that could generate $29-$48 trillion in revenue and drive a third of global GDP growth by 2040. Whether a company is in an arena or not, its strategy will be affected by the arenas of the future, as will our everyday lives. These insights will equip advisors with the foresight to anticipate leadership demands and align top talent with the industries driving the future economy. A session not to be missed.
