CEOs dedicate extensive time and make personal sacrifices to lead their companies. When succession planning focuses exclusively on the incoming CEO, it overlooks the psychological challenges outgoing CEOs encounter during the transition.

To gain deeper insights into what departing CEOs go through, Russell Reynolds Associates conducted in-depth interviews with 30 outgoing CEOs.

It was revealed that 83% of successions were CEO-initiated, with the three most-cited reasons for stepping down being: time-bound, thinking of the organization’s future needs, and personal.
